Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. Stored in your air conditioner’s coils, refrigerants are liquids that cool and dehumidify your air. If there weren’t refrigerants, there wouldn’t be air conditioning. For years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, it will no longer be legal to produce R-22 because of its negative effects on the environment. Introducing R-410A To lessen environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now compatible with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and contains no chlorine, so it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel great about using this refrigerant in West Columbia because it’ll help make your cooling system perform efficiently, reliably and quietly, and offer the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was built prior to 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You might look into upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is ultimately phased out. The old refrigerant will become rare in the next few years, costing you more to run your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Tri City Fuel & Heating Co., Inc. work with R-410A, so you know we have an AC or heat pump that better meets your needs. Additionally, refrain from using”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
