Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter strikes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, the majority of them can be traced back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not handled, your system may suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself a bit of time to view and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system could be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises around the end of their life. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies might notice more symptoms. Some other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
